I am looking real hard at a lever gun in 45-70. The Marlin Guide Gun has caught my eye. Hornady is making a spitzer type bullet now for tube fed guns which improves velocity and trajectory a great deal.

So, although I won't be shooting bear or hippo's here in NorthCentral Indiana, my crazy desire to own a 45-70 seems...well crazy. But that is one cool round, right?

Okay, anybody own/have shot the Marlin in 45-70, any experience with the LeveRevolution ammo from Hornady (I am concerned with feeding issues as the tip is some sort of soft plastic).

I have also looked at the Buffalo Classic from H&R, just not sure about a single shot.

Thanks, Tony

I have a Marlin mod 1895 45-70 lever action, I haven't tried the ammo you speak of though. I have loaded 300 gr. jacketed flat nose hollow points which are in the 2200 fps range and they feed fine. Pretty good thumper. I have a bunch of Lazer cast 410 gr cast lead bullets to try, just haven't got around to it. For me, the 45-70 in lever action is an excellent brush gun, small and light enough to pack and good bear medicine too. Mine still has the red hard rubber recoil pad on it, I have a pachmayr to put on it, must remember to do that tongue.gif

What about some escaped "research" from one of Purdue's farms? ohmy.gif

I have a marlin 1895 in 450 marlin. I shoot 325 grain leverevolution ammo. It is accurate and performed well on one black bear and 3 deer. I would reccomend the ammo.

We recently legalized cartrige firing single shots in Louisiana for augmentation to the black powder season. I did some extensive testing and wrote several articles; Buffalo Guns, Knocking Things Down, The Enigma of Dwell Time, and a few others singing the praise of the Hornady bullet. Marlins and H&R single shots are certainly some of the best. Go see and enjoy at www.foremosthunting.com then come back and report, we have quite a gun knowlege cash there justfor you guys...Pass it on
